As it is, I suppose the first best thing to do would NOT be to complain about the rain - after all, Tennessee is glorious, rain or shine. I’m always amazed at how nice it is around here, even when the rain is pouring down. In Los Angeles (where I lived for the seven years prior to going “back to school” to Vandy) the rainy days are not always so pretty.
(We were asked not just to write about the weather, and here I am… oops.)
This is probably the most stressful time of the first semester. Everyone wants to finish as much work as possible so that they can enjoy Thanksgiving, but that adds just about as much stress as if you’d decided to eat your turkey with one hand and write a Methods section with the other.
My consolation has always been the fact that somehow, some way, the work always gets done. When it does, you can chalk this semester up to yet another seemingly insurmountable obstacle that you somehow got through. For at least some of us, I think we go to college for exactly that reason: because it stretches us and shows us that we can do a lot more than we ever thought we could do.
At Vanderbilt, our professors are daily examples of this phenomenon. Each day, it’s more and more of a privilege to interact with my professors in the Department of Special Education as I see just how much responsibility they shoulder, and I realize how amazing it is that they still find time to teach and mentor us.
