Women needing less money than men to survive? As far as I know, the stereotype is that women shop and spend, not men. This opening statement assumes, as you have figured out, that every woman has a man at work somewhere bringing in the big bucks to supplement her income and thus take care of her.
According to this article, there exists a “salary gap” between the salaries of university-employed women and men–and in salaries, period. I have heard this as a general rule of thumb for as long as I can remember. In addition, in Organizational Theory of Education last fall, some of the readings and classroom discussions centered on “gendered” organizations and workplaces that may favor male employees.
The idea that women earn less than men at basically the same jobs intrigues me. Is it education? Experience? Who we don’t know? This article brings up an interesting point- that certain fields of study in higher education receive funding, while others do not. This suggests that perhaps the salary gap is unintentional if women are simply choosing disciplines that don’t make money (or schools that cannot afford to pay). Are we self-selecting (gasp) lower salaries–or are they culturally imposed?

Are we self-selecting (gasp) lower salaries–or are they culturally imposed?
I think that it can be either one, or a combination of both these factors.
This is my opinion and my opinion only (I must say, that I do base this statement on many years of personal experience).
Men, know exactly what they want, how to get it, and are more ruthless in getting the results, then women. They know how to play and use the system a lot better than women. They look after each other - jobs for the boys, great wages etc etc…………………..
In the main, women are more diplomatic, kindly, self respecting and thoughtful in this regards. They may be as passionate, as good at, or even better at their jobs then men, but they would rather back off or down if it is going to cause too much of an upset or create too much of a argument for them to get ahead particularly in relation to wage parity.
Woman also worry, and have to contend with the bigger picture of life outside of work - home family etc that men don’t seem to be as concerned about. - This also tends to put a bit of a dampener on women’s ambitions and attitudes.
Sorry about the ramblings - Just my thoughts………………………….
Cheers.
Wake up! This is no innocent mishap that women are paid less than men. The salary gap is based on systemic capitalist patriarchy that values and rewards men over women and has been operating since its inception. Women’s work is not valued in the same way as men’s work. An classic example is mothering and the domestic work that women take on without remuneration or acknowledgment (except maybe the patronizing nod on Mother’s Day). Without the disparity in pay among people (in this case women and men, but is also found along racial and class lines) capitalist patriarchy would not survive.
